Story

Where can you find 100 years of stories? On a bookshelf, of course! This was the inspiration for the 2020 NHMRS quilting project of the Hamilton Mennonite Church quilters.

With great excitement and enthusiasm, we took up the challenge of commemorating MCC's 100th anniversary by transforming 100 strips of unique and colourful fabric into 100 books. Neatly lined on 4 shelves, the books are filled with many stories of MCC's past and present. While not meant to be a historical account, they capture some of the early events of MCC's beginnings in South Russia, now Ukraine. Many of the people in our congregation are descendants of those first Mennonites refugees who sought relief from their North American "brethren". We recognize that we would not be here if it were not for the compassionate work of MCC and for that we are immensely grateful.

Our "books" also include some of the MCC programs and projects that we have been involved in over the years. From relief kits, to Ten Thousand Villages, to restorative justice, MCC has provided us with many opportunities to help and serve together.

Alongside the rows of books, we wanted to include some creative elements of significance that added a touch of whimsy to the bookcase. A bowl of corn grits depicts the daily ration of food served in the first make-shift kitchens in Ukraine. It sits atop a stack of books that reminds us that God provides our daily bread. A mug represents fellowship and hospitality and our call to generous giving and living. A globe, displaying Europe and Asia, highlights MCC's worldwide mission of relief, development and peace in the name of Christ. Tucked in the corner, a tiny sprouting plant reminds us that every small work can have a big impact.

Nearly half of the books are untitled. What stories are still untold? Perhaps the book that anchors the bottom right corner, "Into the next century", will begin another bookcase of new stories that tell of MCC's ministry of love and compassion. Final sale price $2,000.
