Butterflies
1068
This beautiful work of art has a very unique beginning. Some fabric blocks with stamped butterfly patterns were discovered on the cupboard shelves in the home of he late Lovina (Mrs. Nelson Weber) and were donated to the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church Women. It was undecided what to do with the blocks so once again they were put to rest on the shelf. They resurfaced and Karen Snyder offered to take them home and came up with an idea. Her artistic eye and talent helped her see that she could use embroidery thread instead of the "Artex liquid embroidery" with which they were initially meant to be finished. Karen researched the actual colours of some of Ontario's butterflies. The exquisite hand embroidered stitches consisted of French knots, satin stitch, back stitch and stem stitch. Karen then used long and short stitches to fill in the bodies of the butterflies. This was the finishing touch that made these butterflies magically come to life. Loretta Martin designed the wall hanging with the adaptation of Debbie Bowles design for Maple Island Quilts Inc. and Doris Pfohl used her expert sewing experience to sew the blocks together. It was quilted by the women of S.J.M.C. A truly stunning piece of art.
This quilt is identical to the one sold in last year's sale. Two identical quilts were made at the same time. Last year's quilt was highlighted (p. 25) in the Relief Sale Catalogue. Final sale price $900.
